School Fab Lab AR Mobile Application

Design, configure and transform your classroom into a Fab Lab Makerspace using mixed reality and situated learning.

About SFL AR app:

Over the last four years, we developed Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications to bring digital fabrication laboratories, known as Fab Lab Makerspaces, to K-12 education. The Apps empower educators to create immersive environments that bring digital fabrication machines into their classroom. Students learn how 3D Printers, Laser Cutters, Vinyl Cutters and CNC Milling Machines work and experience fabricating various objects. With this new tool teachers and students can design, configure and transform their classroom into a virtual Fab Lab Makerspace using VR, AR and situated learning.

Our app provides a set of digital fabrication machines needed to design your Fab Lab Makerspace.

Mission:

Our passion is to empower youth with 21st century skills. Our mission is to improve the teaching of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) in schools, utilizing mixed reality as a toolset for educators.

SFL AR Features:

– Bring realistically scaled Fab Lab machines into actual spaces.
– Set multiple machines in your space to design and finalize your new School Fab Lab layout.
– Operate machines in mixed reality to learn about the digital fabrication process and capabilities of each machine.
– Take a video walk-through of your space and record the machines in operation.
– Share your video with others

This app is available to public, private and charter Schools K-12.

SFL AR works on these devices:

iPhone 8
iPhone 8 Plus
iPhone X
iPad 5th Gen 2017
iPad 6th Gen 2018
iPad Pro 2nd Gen 2017
iPad Pro 3rd Gen 2018

SFL AR is compatible with these devices:

iPhone 6s
iPhone 7s
iPhone 7 plus

Methodology:

We bring mixed reality to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) programs, utilizing Machine Learning and Augmented Reality (AR).  Real and digital objects co-exist and interact in real-time. We use the camera on an iPad to scan the classroom, so it can be transformed into a virtual Fab Lab Makerspace.  Once the space is digitized then the App user can place digital fabrication machines in the virtual Fab Lab, and operate these machines as if they were actually there.

Here is our Mixed Reality in STEAM education workshop schedule.

Find more information about the App in our forum.  Learn how to use it, create new feature requests, report bugs, ask for help and provide your feedback.

What is a School Fab Lab Makerspace?

A gateway to tomorrow for the students and teachers of today, with a program of project-based learning for schools that includes:

•A Fab Lab Makerspace with work stations for physical and virtual fabrication
•Development of essential 21st century work skills
•Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) emphasis
•Constructionism methodology for maximum student engagement
•Professional development and support for teachers

The Constructionism theory was developed by Professor Seymour Papert at MIT Media Lab. The Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) was created by Professor Neil Gershenfeld at MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms.
